Vestibular (Balance Disorders) Clinic

Vestibular disorders are disorders of the body’s balance system in the inner ear, and can be caused by a wide range of conditions including vertigo, Meniere’s disease, acoustic neuroma, trauma, ear infections and many others.

For people experiencing dizziness, spinning, imbalance, a tilting environment, nausea, constant falls or motion sickness, our vestibular program allows patients to be evaluated, tested and receive rehabilitation all in one place.

Vestibular Clinic

Our Vestibular Clinic offers audiological evaluations by some of the best clinicians in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Treatment staff includes audiologists, who work with your physicians specializing in neurology and ear, nose and throat issues.

Equipment includes:

  • VNG/ENG (videonystagmography/electronystagmography): To test inner ear and central motor functions
  • Soundproof booth: For audiology testing

 Conditions we evaluate may include:

  • Unilateral (one –sided) Vestibular Dysfunction
  • Bilateral (two-sided) Vestibular Dysfunction
  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
  • Acoustic Neuroma
  • Post-concussion Syndrome

Once we make the evaluation, the patient may be recommended for Vestibular Rehabilitation.

Vestibular Rehabilitation

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a therapeutic approach to control dizziness and disequilibrium associated with vestibular disorders. While medications have been designed to reduce symptoms, rehabilitation through exercise is an alternate form of treatment designed to promote central nervous system compensation for inner ear deficits.

The goals of vestibular rehabilitation include:

  • Decrease dizziness
  • Increase balance function
  • Increase general activity levels
  • Provide an individualized treatment plan

Before a specific exercise program is begun, our therapists evaluate the individual's musculoskeletal system, balance, gait and vertigo.

Exercise programs are developed to target daily activities affected by vestibular disorders. Rehabilitation is centered on activities that encourage the brain to adjust to the vertigo/dizziness response, activities to improve coordination and muscle responses and exercises to promote vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) compensation, which fosters clear vision and balance while moving.
